Basil Vietnamese Cuisine – Calgary

My love of Vietnamese food started in San Francisco where I experienced the wonders of Vietnamese Yellow Curry (totally different and equally as good as Thai Yellow Curry). But… then I came home to my small town where you couldn’t buy any kind of curry paste from the grocery store at that time. I delved into cookbooks and made a few things at home, but I never knew if it tasted ‘right’ I just knew it tasted good!

Fast forward a few years, I’ve married a Canadian and I’m living in Calgary, missing my small town. Discovering Basil, (a Vietnamese restaurant in N.E. Calgary) was the perfect distraction. I quickly fell in love with the fresh flavors and exotic spices

Naturally, once I was hooked I had to try all kinds of dishes on the menu. My all-time favorites are the Sate Noodle Soup, Chicken Pho, Sate Chicken or Lemongrass Chicken Bun Noodle Bowl, and of course, their Yellow Curry. And… because I really can’t narrow it down, Pork Spring Rolls, Shrimp Summer Rolls, Shaking Beef, and Glazed Salmon. If I have any room left at all, I love to leave with a Vietnamese Iced Coffee in hand, (you can get them hot as well, but iced is my favorite).

My husband, who was pretty sure that he didn’t like Vietnamese Cuisine has become a convert as well. His favorite is B8. – Spicy Sate Chicken and Spring Rolls over Rice Noodles and Fresh Vegetables (pictured below). Over time, it’s become my favorite as well, and it was almost embarrassing to order 2 of the same thing multiple days in a row on our last visit!

Now that we’re living in Montana again, I’ve been learning to make Vietnamese food at home to pacify myself until the next visit to Calgary.

What’s your favorite Vietnamese dish?
